California Training Facility Permanently Closed
5/16/25 (Vista, CA) – It is with great regret that we announce the permanent closure of the California Training Facility (CATF) in Vista, California. CATF was created in 2018 by California Skateparks to serve both elite Olympic skateboarders as well as aspiring amateurs. Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond our control, we can no longer continue operations at the facility. As a result, all programs, including the Development Program, have been discontinued. Despite the unexpected circumstances, we remain grateful for the opportunity to have supported the skateboarding community.
Opened ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, CATF provided skateboarding’s first Olympians access to world-class Park and Street courses so they could train in a private setting. The facility also fulfilled a secondary role as a full-scale experimental site for California Skateparks’ construction and design teams to refine, validate, and evolve our temporary competition-course construction techniques. This allowed California Skateparks to modify CATF’s Park and Street courses over the years to meet the training needs of elite competitors.
Located in skateboarding’s Southern California heartland, CATF was home to the sport’s biggest stars—athletes who became household names after their success at the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Teams from around the globe have spent countless hours at CATF, which was also the Official Training Center for Team USA.
More than half of all skateboarders competing at the Paris 2024 Olympics trained at CATF in the months leading up to the Games, including more than half of all Medalists. This is just one example of the impact the facility has had on international competitive skateboarding—an impact that made CATF the Home Of Champions.
We would like to thank all the skaters who have called CATF home over the years, from Olympic Medalists to the youngest members of our Development Program. Despite all the work behind the scenes to establish and maintain the facility, it was the skaters who were the heartbeat of CATF—skaters who came from all over the world to perfect their craft here before unleashing their talents on the global stage at X Games, Street League Skateboarding, Rockstar Games, World Skate Championships, or the Olympics.
We also want to thank Dave Brown and our many friends and partners who supported and activated the facility, including skaters, coaches, federations, and organizations from around the world. Almost every day, sessions at CATF became a mini United Nations of skateboarding, with a half dozen or more national teams typically represented.
CATF was a passion project for California Skateparks. Soon after its founding in 2018, the facility quickly became a critical resource for international competitive skateboarding. California Skateparks has designed and built nearly all elite competition venues over the past decade, including the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Olympics, and the terrain at CATF closely resembled many of the features found in those courses.
We look forward to seeing and reconnecting with many of our former CATF Members and Guests at future skateboarding competitions and events, most of which will continue to be designed and built by California Skateparks. We appreciate your talents, your friendship, and the time you spent with us. And to all our CATF Members and Development Program students over the years—thank you for skating and growing with us. We wish you continued fun and success along your skateboarding journey.
